Shop Helper

Status: CLOSED/Shortlisting

Reporting to the Chief Mechanical Officer, this entry level Shop Helper’s primary responsibilities will assist in all areas of servicing, repairing, and overhauling of railway equipment; other additional duties may include:

  • Maintaining shop floor cleanliness;
  • Assisting in organizing materials and tools for required jobs;
  • Cleaning and de-greasing of machinery;
  • Assisting with facility maintenance tasks;
  • Operating a forklift;
  • Providing assistance in Stores as needed;
  • Complying with company safety policies and procedures as this is considered a safety sensitive position;
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School diploma completion or GED equivalent;
  • Computer experience is preferred;
  • Material handling experience is preferred;
  • Strong mechanical skills and experience working with a variety of tools and equipment is required;
  • Fabricating and/or welding experience is an asset;
  • Ability to operate a forklift – will train if no forklift certification;
  • A valid BC class 5 drivers licence is required and;
  • Ability to work with or around industrial equipment, e.g. Locomotives, trains.

While this position may initially be a Shop Helper, there is opportunity for advancement within the department should the incumbent demonstrate the right mechanical skills and attitude.  Incumbent must show initiative, good work ethic, excellent attendance and a positive attitude; must be willing to work in a team environment and cooperate with coworkers.
