The Company

Almost one half of the traffic handled by SRY originates or terminates on Annacis Island, where major automobile and forest product distribution facilities are located. SRY’s diverse customer base includes over 150 shippers of automobile, forest, building, agricultural, chemical, consumer, and steel products.

SRY handles approximately 65,000 carloads annually and owns over 125 miles of track, of which 62 miles are mainline and interchange with four North American Class I railroads at six locations. SRY is market driven and customer-oriented, and provides neutral short line service. Combined with their long-haul partners, CN, BNSF, CPR, and UP, they have connections to all rail-served destinations in North America.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, General Accounting, the incumbent will be responsible for the accounts payable cycle for our growing freight business. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will contribute to the efficient operation of our Finance department. The following is an outline but not an exhaustive list of some of those responsibilities:

  • Processes payments, supplier invoices, expense reports and other requisitions related to SRY by checking invoice content against purchase orders to ensure accuracy and consistency of data, reconciling and adjusting discrepancies between suppliers and SRY documents, reviewing document distribution, maintaining pending files of incomplete invoices and purchase orders, confirming approving authorities on invoices;
  • Sets up and maintains pending and compiling files for review and follow up to acquire missing documents/data and/or to expedite supplier payments;
  • Responds to inquiries or requests from suppliers on a variety of matters;
  • Runs aged payable report and AP/GL distribution reports;
  • Assists other sections of the Finance department as required.

The Person

The successful incumbent will have:

  • Minimum high school graduation or equivalent;
  • Completion of some accounting courses, certificate or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution is preferred;
  • Three (3) years accounts payable experience in an office/industrial environment is preferred;
  • Experience in Oracle/Enterprise or similar accounting system is an asset;
  • Advanced skills with MS Excel and Word;
  • Excellent attention to detail, methodical and quick data entry skills;
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities, meet timely deadlines, and work independently;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service oriented skills coupled with strong communication skills;
  • Strong relationship building ability in a team environment;
  • Proven problem-solving skills along with the ability to deliver creative solutions;
